The Solicitors’ Charity, has recently enhanced its governance structure with the addition of two new trustees. Audrey Ludwig MBE and Edel Smith join the board, bringing with them a wealth of expertise in law, finance, and governance.

Their appointments are expected to bolster the charity’s strategic direction, ensuring continued support and integrity in its operations aimed at aiding solicitors and their families during challenging times.

Backgrounds of New Trustees

Audrey Ludwig, who was appointed an MBE in June 2025 for her contributions to equality and human rights, has an extensive background in equality law. She began practising in this field in 2006 and continued until 2024. Ludwig is also the founder of Suffolk Law Centre, which plays a pivotal role in providing access to justice for vulnerable communities.

Following her legal career, Ludwig now heads Audrey Ludwig Training and Consulting Ltd, offering specialised training to various groups including legal professionals and individuals with disabilities. Her commitment to justice and inclusion mirrors the core values of The Solicitors’ Charity.

Edel Smith, a Chartered Accountant with a robust background in financial management, currently oversees Finance & Investments at the Bank Workers Charity. Her experience spans both the charity and corporate sectors, having previously held senior finance roles at prominent insurance firms such as Legal & General and AXA.

Smith’s expertise will be crucial in maintaining stringent financial governance and strategic planning for The Solicitors’ Charity, ensuring its sustainability and effectiveness in supporting its beneficiaries.

Impact of the New Appointments

Nick Gallagher, CEO of The Solicitors’ Charity, expressed enthusiasm about the new appointments, stating, ‘We are thrilled to welcome Audrey and Edel to the Trustees Board. Their experience, insight, and shared commitment to these important voluntary roles will greatly benefit the charity.’

Gallagher further noted the strategic importance of their roles, adding, ‘I look forward to working with them as we continue to enhance our services for solicitors in times of need to help them thrive.’ Their appointments are seen as a strategic move to fortify the charity’s governance and operational capabilities in a time when the demand for its services is increasingly critical.

The addition of Audrey Ludwig and Edel Smith to the board of The Solicitors’ Charity marks a significant enhancement in the charity’s ability to fulfil its mission. With their combined expertise in law, finance, and governance, the charity is better positioned to address the complex needs of solicitors facing hardship.

As the charity continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of its beneficiaries, the contributions of its board members remain crucial in steering its efforts towards significant and impactful support, embodying its core values of compassion, integrity, and strategic vision.
